Jenny Haviers

24 Apr

A Jenny Haniver is the carcass of a ray or skate which has been modified and subsequently dried, resulting in a grotesque preserved specimen. Many moons ago sailors supported themselves by selling their artistic  gruesome creations to working sailors as well as to tourists visiting the docks. They freak me right out. This first image is from a Japanese fish market last year – one of the few places in the World where the tradition continues (fang you to pink tentacle for this post).
