Love this new piece from Stuart Semple for Officers, reminds me of the awesome print he did for The Futureheads FH10 project (still can’t believe they are 10 years old). Really like their music too – Counting the Guns intro really reminds me of Depeche Mode who I LOVE. Here is what you need to know;
OFFICERS: BLUE
1. First single colour limited edition print, produced in collaboration with British artist Stuart Semple.
2. Available in a super limited quantity of just 30, this print coincides with our debut ‘Co-Education’ EP.
3. Signed, numbered and hand screen printed in pure process cyan, ‘OFFICERS: BLUE’ is the first print to be released from a set of four different colour ways, featuring the iconic triangular motif that Stuart has created for the band.
The lovely Stuart is working with Chris&Tibor to make a pretty cool collection out in April 2011. I am going to start begging now so I can buy one of the necklaces asap:
The line presents a playful yet simpathetic translation of Stuart’s iconic style into what we believe are truly cultural products with soul Pieces include pink leather and black clutch bags (studded with screen-printed Perspex, each individually hand-stitched), graffiti-style shopper tote bags and slouchy shoulder bags in heavy silk satin, bold necklaces and key-rings.
Stuart Semple created this amazing perspex & mirror sculpture created for New York’s Museum of Art & Design Metal Ball – I HEART this and very tempted at £390. So now just need to get my paws on one of these heavy metal corsets and this mirror then that’s my inner (very hidden) rock chick satisfied for 2010.
Top marks to The Sun for this very cool way of celebrating their Page 3 “lovelies” 40th Birthday (my favourite piece is the one above from Stuart Semple).
THIS week The Sun is celebrating 40 years of the nation’s favourite pin-ups – and today we unveil our stunning Page 3 charity art project (great minds think alike). Leading painters and photographers have created artworks inspired by our girls that will then be auctioned off to help Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
The Futureheads Celebrate Their 10th Birthday With the Help of Iconic British Artists
The Futureheads, have collaborated with iconic artists including David Shrigley, Pete Fowler and Stuart Semple to create a series of limited edition prints, raising money for Newcastle based charities with all of the artists generously giving their time for free. The project came about as the band discussed ways to celebrate their 10th birthday, ahead of their ‘Futurefest’ gig on the 23rd December in Newcastle. For the ‘FH10’ project the band sent each one of the artists an album, and asked them to respond to its music as if creating the album cover for the first ever time. Taking about the project Ross Millard of the band said:
For us, FH10 is a brilliant way of us celebrating ten years of making music together; new life breathed into our back-catalogue by four artists whose work we have admired from afar for many years.
We wanted to celebrate our first decade in a creative way, not by slobbering over a few pints, desperately trying to recall venues we played back in the early days, but by looking toward the future by giving birth to something new – having new creations to enjoy and shout about.
Over the years we’ve written and recorded a lot of music, and in the last few years we’ve even released some of it ourselves too, but projects like this one, that operate on the fringes of the music, are often the most fun to be part of, because they can teach you a thing or two about a world you don’t inhabit on a daily basis. It’s been wonderful collaborating with artists who can re-interpret our music into something completely new and invigorating – waiting to see what they’d come back with was really exciting.
Each of the prints is available in a strictly limited edition run of 100, signed by the artists and priced at £50. They will go on sale via leading online cultural retailer Culture Label on the 6th December, available on a first come first served basis.
David graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1991. His works on paper, photographs and sculptures have been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the world. Previously David has made cover art for bands such as Deer Hoof and Malcolm Middleton.
He’s a great artist who makes twisted lo-fi drawings, sculptures and other bits. They’re often amusing but can also be dark and difficult. He lives in Glasgow where he went to art school. Since then he’s made a name for himself with books and postcards, and by appearing in 2000′s Beck’s Futures, among loads of other things (source).
The Chaos by David Shrigley (limited edition of 100, each signed by the artist, £50)
Pete Fowler is best known for his artwork for the Welsh band Super Furry Animals. He has recently directed a video for Clinic, and also created a set of toys for The Might Boosh and The Magic Numbers. Pete’s work inhabits a world where character design meets music and art in a weird and wonderful way. That world is Monsterism Island, a place where banjos are played by horned owls and synths tweaked by mutant horses. His unique instantly recognizable approach and sense of playfulness and visual adventures that have brought his work to the attention of people around the world.
Stuart Semple’s drawing, painting and printmaking re-articulates pop cultural elements into a personal universe of fear, isolation and nostalgia. He is one of the most critically and commercially successful British artists of the post YBA generation. He has been recognized by The Times, i-D, BBC, Esquire, GQ, L’Uomo Vogue, Art News, ArtForum and others. Stuart’s works can be found in the Getty, Niarchos and David Roberts collections. He also counts Debbie Harry, Sienna Miller and Jean Charles de Castelbajac amongst his celebrity collectors and supporters. Semple regularly exhibits worldwide, recently completed a Lady GaGa cover for West East Magazine (Hong Kong).
News & Tributes by Stuart Semple (limited edition of 100, each signed by the artist, £50)
The Futureheads discovered Sunderland based Lyndsey’s work at the National Portrait Gallery and instantly knew they wanted her to be part of the Futureheads 10 project. An artist based in the north-east of England, she graduated from Sunderland University in 2004, since which time her work has been displayed in local galleries and notably featured in the BP Portrait Award 2010 at the National Portrait Gallery, London.
The Futureheads are about to celebrate the tenth anniversary of their first ever live performance. Since forming in Barry and David Hyde’s garage in winter 2000, the Sunderland fourpiece have released four albums, ‘The Futureheads’ (2004) ‘News & Tributes’ (2006) ‘This Is Not The World’ (2008) and ‘The Chaos’ (2010). Famous for their four part harmonies and exhilarating live shows, their hits include ‘Decent Days and Nights’, ‘The Beginning Of The Twist’ and ‘Hounds of Love’.
With their roots firmly in the North-East, the band set up their own label in 2008, Nul Records, which has seen the release of the bands last two studio albums. Their most recent album ‘The Chaos’ featured the top 20 hit ‘Heartbeat Song’ and 2010 has seen the band touring throughout the USA, Europe and the UK. The Futureheads will be headlining a celebratory 10-year event, Futurefest, at Newcastle Academy on 23rd December, featuring a host of the best bands from the North-East.

Here is a preview of the Stuart Semple cake (still a cake in progress) for The Mad Artists Tea Party Cake Britain event this week (eeeeeeeeeek):
Stuart very kindly allowed photography of his work as it was being created – for it’s installation into the gallery there are some VERY special unique Jellymongers Bompas & Parr touches to come. I LOVE the fact Brad & Angelina are on the top, and as a unique, edible, Stuart Semple work of art you can see it clearly follows his trademark color palette as shown in his work below. I have a total cake crush on this bad boy!!!!
The exhibition, which is sponsored by Tate & Lyle Sugars in support of its switch to Fairtrade, teams the UK’s most creative bakers with artists for an exhibition at The Future Gallery, 5 Great Newport Street, London, runs from 27th to 29th August.
Some of the UK’s most highly praised artists (& one BRILLIANT band) are swapping canvas for cake and oil paint for icing sugar during the exhibition: Stuart Semple, Alex Turvey, David A Smith, StenSouL, Pete Fowler, George Morton-Clark and The Futureheads. Their work (& lyrics) will be turned into edible art based on the theme “fair” by contemporary food artists including Crumbs and Doilies, Lily Vanilli, The Curious Confectioner, Bompass & Parr and Bea’s Of Bloomsbury.
All proceeds will support the Fairtrade Foundation and two charities: Richard House and We Make Peace. Tate & Lyle started moving its entire cane sugars range to Fairtrade in February 2008, which at the time was the largest ever switch to Fairtrade labelling by any major UK food or drink brand. In the first year alone, the switch created a return of at least £2 million in Fairtrade premiums for cane farmers. Entry to the exhibition is free in exchange for a ‘fair’ donation.
Love this Stuart Semple happy happy installation at The Tate – even more so in light of yesterday’s fun activities with him. They were (of course) MATP related but that’s all I can say for now!
Oooooo it’s like when they unveil the new portrait of the Queen, except this has not, and never will, involve Rolf Harris. You may have seen some of these already but here are the official Cake Britain, presented by the Mad Artists Tea Party, portraits taken by Nathan Pask. I can NOT wait until we can shoot Eat Your Heart Out. Bring that on ASAP!
