Hipster Hunt

13 May

We all know hipsters. Every New York City neighborhood has its share of them, and a quick Google search brings up dozens of hipster blogs, hipster YouTube videos and hipster hangouts. Hipsters are the ones everyone loves to hate.

Everyone? When Lorena arrived to New York City from France last August, she’d never heard of hipsters. And when she asked, she got vague, often contradictory responses: Hipsterism is a lifestyle. No, it’s an attitude. No, it’s a pseudo-attitude. Hipsters are penniless creative types. No, they’re just rich kids pretending to be. Hipsters are environmentally conscious. No, they pose as tree-huggers but shop at Wal-Mart.

She was confused.

This video attempts to de-code the hipster for the clueless foreigner, like Lorena. In this piece, she invites viewers along for the journey as she hunts for the meaning of the term “hipster.” This quirky piece takes viewers around the streets of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where they are guided by an “accidental hipster” blogger. It also incorporates the voices of the Journalism School’s own Prof. David Hajdu, as he delves into the term’s jazzy origins.

MUST SEE! Silent Hill Nurse Cake

25 Jun

This fucked up Silent Hill, with a great pair of cake tits on her, is 100% edible and from the uber talented Mamma Jamma Cakes. This cake was created in response to the Silent Hill brief I issued for a desert table commission (see press release at the end of this post which also shares a little more information about how this cake was made). This cake will be getting eaten at the Alice Cooper freak show installation this coming Monday. As I have said a LOT this is one of the best cakes I have ever seen in terms of a perfect response to a brief – eat your heart out Ace of Cakes! Read more about our other cake projects here, see more of the Silent Hill cake installation on Flickr, or visit us on Facebook.

An Edible Horror Show in Hyde Park

Delicious ‘shattered glass’, ‘barbed wire’ and ‘pus covered bloody bandages’ to be consumed at the Alice Cooper freak show audition.

Curator of cake & chaos, Miss Cakehead, is set to create one of her scariest edible experiences to date with an installation based on the Silent Hill video game that also inspired a 2006 horror film of the same name.

Following the hit of the ‘Morning After’ table at the Kerrang Awards, Cakehead Loves was asked to produce a ‘disturbing’ edible experience at the Alice Cooper Freak Show auditions at Hyde Park this Monday 27th June. The backdrop to her piece referencing lyrics of the Alice Cooper Hit ‘No More Mr Nice Guy’ with the lyrics “I used to be such a sweet, sweet thing ‘Til they got a hold of me” written on newspaper in blood, referencing a similar scene in the Silent Hill video game.

Surgical cloth, shattered edible ‘glass’, gruesome cakes & an amazing 100% edible sculpture of the Silent Hill ‘Nurse’ are amongst the goodies which will feature nestled amongst edible barbed wire and anatomical heart cakes displayed on cake stands covered with blood stained bandages.

The centre piece Silent Hill Nurse cake is made form a total of 6 stacked chocolate cakes and 100% edible apart from a wooden pole used for support. The head was wrapped in individually rolled and textured bandages which were then pressed and molded into it to give an appearance of decaying, rotting bandages and flesh.

Laura Edwards of Mamma Jamma Cakes who made the cake commented:

“With Silent Hill being the theme, and the nurse being such an iconic figure from the game and film, she really had to be the centre piece really should be the nurse which I wanted to create as a 100% edible bust.

Other Gruesome edibles include Gash Wound Cupcakes from The Butcher of Caker Street (delicious vanilla cupcakes topped with open flesh wounds, ripped stitches and clotting blood) & a solid chocolate skull cast from a real human example by Canadian food artist Marina Maldava.

Devon based caked maker Kiss & Bake up has provided jumbo badass sculpted chocolate cake pops featuring some of Silent Hill’s most prominent characters such as Pyramid Head & the Mannequin. Cupcake obsessed Anne Murphy of I Heart Cupcakes has provided red velvet cupcakes with white icing splashed with blood cupcakes whilst artist ‘Thefty’, AKA Helena Maratheftis acted as an art director for the project. Guerilla Science have also contributed some of their infamous panacotta brains.

Paradoxically the next event from Miss Cakehead – Cakey Perry (www.cakeyperry.com) – could not be further away from this concept. A selection of cakes and other treats being served at a Katy Perry inspired high tea.

The Mad Artists Tea was formed in 2010 by “Miss Cakehead” with the aim of continuing to support creativity in cake making, and to campaign for the skill of cake decorating to become increasingly recognized as an important field of art. It aims to work with both professional & amateur cake makers finding and nuturing new baking talent, whist continuing to push the limits of creativity with cake. It undertakes a variety of different projects for clients, whilst Miss Cakehead also creates and curates home baked projects such as Eat Your Heart Out the world’s first 18+ cake shop.

Attaching wings to angels

29 Sep

“Craig Welch takes viewers inside a surreal, meticulously crafted world to meet a mysterious protagonist and his otherworldly visitor. In this surreal exposition, we meet a man, obsessed with control. His intricate gadgets manipulate yet insulate, as his science dissects and reduces. How exactly are wings attached to the back of angels? In this invented world drained of emotion, where everything goes through the motions, he is brushed by indefinite longings. Whether he can transcend his obsessions and fears is the heart of the matter. A film without words.”

I found this post over at Who Killed Bambi and I have to say it’s totally freaking me out – there is clearly something massively unnerving about the concept of how wings are attached to angels…
