Pomp de Franc’s cakes in quails eggs

20 Dec

I love the rustic nature of Pomp de Franc (Katie Franklin’s cakes). For example her amazing work at the Experimental Food Society Spectacular at the Truman Brewery…

I painstakingly made cakes inside real quails eggs. Peel away the shell, as you would to a boiled egg, to reveal the egg shaped cake inside. I made them in the following four flavours:

  • Dark chocolate and Espresso
  • Sour Cherry
  • Banana and Dime Bar
  • Courgette and Pistachio

Sweet Mushrooms

11 Nov

The truth of the matter is I have never, on purpose, eaten a mushroom in my entire life (bleargh). Apparently this makes me strange so I thought I might as well do a round up of the best cake / chocolate / meringue mushrooms out there. Why should I torment myself eating the most evil of all vegetables when you can enjoy these sweet treats below… (all images sourced via creative commons / google image search)

Edible Van Gogh

30 Aug Vincent-Van-Gogh-Starry-Night-Cupcake-Cake

I am a massive fan of these Van Gogh cakes but that is mainly down to the colours so I guess I need to credit the artist himself, not the cake makers for that. OK so if I had to choose I would say that the cupcakes featured in the gallery (and again above) are the absolute stand out winners for me as they are an original / different interpretation of the Van Gogh piece.

Wayne Thiebaud Cakes

14 Aug

This post totally shows the evolution of an idea, and how a concept can be updated and tweaked. It starts with this 1963 painting from Wayne Thiebaud’s, Cakes, where the frosting is perfection as are the choice of cakes on offer.

Then American artist Sharon Core recreated and photographed Thiebaud’s sugary sweet Pop Art paintings from the early 1960′s for her 2004 work.

Then feasting on art showed how you could do it with cupcakes as shown below. They look a bit crappy but in this instance that’s not the point! Fancy having a go then full directions here.

Silent Hill Cake Pops!

15 Jun

We’ve been asked to work on the Alice Cooper freak show auditions in a few weeks, as well as provide general entertainment and perform. We’ll keep the precise details under wraps for now (I know my big brother reads this blog and reports back to the rest of my family in Southampton – hello Michael) but I can reveal it will be Silent Hill themed (oh & that I’ll be wearing the Prangsta frilly pants that seemed to go down well at the Kerrang! Awards too).

Kiss & Bake Up have come up trumps already so I am delighted to share the first samples of her awesome cake pops which will form part of the table (the final versions will have hinges and sharper edges). I love these on their own of course but the entire edible display, featuring work from the likes of Mamma Jamma Cakes, is going to freak the f**k out of everyone. Yay!

Rainbow Vagina Ring

29 May

This has got to be the worst wedding ring in the world – what is wrong with people, I mean this is not even crafted properly like Holly Andrew’s vagina cakes (& yes I spotted the ‘taste the rainbow’ quote too I just can’t bring myself to comment on it).

Cakes & Coco De Mer

19 Apr

As you know I was asked to judge for Coco De Mer’s ‘cake & cunnilingus’ day… here’s the pictures…

We lent Coco De Mer some V cakes for inspiration...

At last a different cake shop!

23 Mar

Das Neue Kubitscheck dares to be different by offering a combination of cakes & beautiful design which actually delivers something really different than your average cake shop. Basically what Cox & Cookie should have done rather that the contrived bullshit& bad cakes it currently churns out (still don’t understand why). It looks to be like a less contrived version of the Icecreamists and even if you don’t speak German their website is worth a look.
