My Island of the Dolls post managed to freak out a lot of people – this version in Japan is almost like the Disney version. Not as dark and twisted so clearly not so much fun – there are similarities though….
Awashima jinja is a shrine for women, famed for it’s massive collection of dolls. There are a lot of Japanese superstitions about dolls, and a good number of people in Japan seem to find them a little mysterious or frightening, believing that they have souls, or the power to influence human lives.

I DO admire this ‘Rappin Granny’ but after the first minute I was tempted to slip Rohypnol into my own tea! About three minutes too long – and I hope that is a dentists surgery she is playing around in! Worth a watch but you may not last for the long haul.

I was pretty surprised about the comment backlash on Creative Review in response to Mr Bingo’s work. But having seen the first pieces in for a street art for Haiti project – Au Secours - I get it. Clearly Haiti fund raising is an issue very close to my heart, but I am absolutely staggered at the bad taste of the first piece submitted to the project from Pure Evil. Maybe it is just me, but I think the people of Haiti deserve more respect (stomps foot).
It really boils down to the fact that all these great endeavors (and yes I love how everyone feels the need to show their support) should be about raising as much money as possible not enhancing your own personal profile during a personal hike up ego mountain. To raise serious cash from art then surely it follows that you need to create REALLY desirable works of art which people will pay a lot of money. Yes from a really strong A List artist this may have worked, but at this relatively low level it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth if I am honest. Off the top of my head I can think of 10 really strong concepts this artist could have produced, in his trademark style, without simply making a stencil based on an image grabbed from Google (the photographer for which is not credited).

I knew my 1st (ahem) in Marine Geography would come good one day – and here it is! A viral campaign to share the blobfish which has got to be the most depressed looking animal in the World… and also clearly reminds me of something else too. On a serious note it is an endangered species.
Internet users around the World have taken it upon themselves to save this species with a unique viral campaign.

It is not the fact this is a pregnant ‘man’ that makes me feel a bit urgh about these images – but the fact it would appear that with the third child now on the way it would appear that being parents is more about having cash babies (sorry I mean cash cows), and miking them for all they can, rather than other more healthy motivations perhaps. Just saying…

Such a great idea to get Scottish-born illustrator David Shrigley to do this Pringle (clothes not something you can’t stop once your popped) advert – I dream of those budgets!

I found this image of ‘graffiti’ in Haiti actually really powerful:
You can see more of the Haiti Earthquake Fundraiser (it is going to be a corker) on the blog here.
