My Island of the Dolls post managed to freak out a lot of people – this version in Japan is almost like the Disney version. Not as dark and twisted so clearly not so much fun – there are similarities though….
Awashima jinja is a shrine for women, famed for it’s massive collection of dolls. There are a lot of Japanese superstitions about dolls, and a good number of people in Japan seem to find them a little mysterious or frightening, believing that they have souls, or the power to influence human lives.
