Nomura jellyfish

July 5, 2009 · 39 Comments

(01/08/09 UPDATE HERE)

Nomura jellyfish are huge creatures which can grow to 6.5 feet (2 meters) wide and weigh up to 450 pounds (220 kilograms). Common in Chinese and Korean waters, their population is on the rise in the fishing waters off Japan causing chaos as they poison fish with their toxic stings. Thankfully their sting can be survivable in humans, though one could assume it would hurt like f*ck.

I’m pretty sure the second picture is a shop.

  • Jon // July 6, 2009 at 3:02 am

The last photo looks like the scene from Sphere – the movie with helen hunt. Almost science fiction

  • Anima // July 6, 2009 at 3:23 am

I’ve been told that the second photo you have up there is photoshopped. The Nomuras don’t grow that large.

The second picture from the top looks too amazing to be true. In addition the lighting/ focus on the diver does not match with the local lighting and focus on the tentacles near by. This indicates that the diver was likely super-imposed. Especially since one of the indicated size would clearly exceed the 2 meter width, stated in the article to be the record width for one of these jellies. Something to think about.

    Dudes

Did you see the growth of the tentacles up the side and into the crown? The Average large size was 2 meters, knowing how many sea creatures have no limits in size – that one is probably quite real also.

Problems in a Believing society, folks stop their belief patterns rather ion the conservative side.

Nature has no limits Ssss Not Conservative

  • TheFaz // July 11, 2009 at 7:27 pm

The second one is real. The diver is Verne Troyer.

  • Antonio // July 12, 2009 at 1:05 am

They look like giant brains or smth…

  • Colin // July 12, 2009 at 9:11 pm

Bill, Anima…you guys are retards. Shopped? Because it’s too large? Because…you know, nothing strange ever occurs in nature…like…oversized things…particularly in the ocean?…

That second photo simply must be shopped! There’s NO WAY possible that this species of jellyfish could EVER reach that size! EVER!!!!!

-_-’ This, brought to you by the folks that think that Earth is 13,000 years old, and that God put dinosaur fossils here to test our faith. Grrrr.

  • Genesis // July 12, 2009 at 10:47 pm

Holy crap the last one scared me so much – it’s like the movie Sphere.

  • nicepooty // July 28, 2009 at 4:13 am

acidity is on the rise in oceans, obsorbing all our carbon dioxide and what have you.. while eggs and mollusk shells are disolving and becoming weak, jellyfish are flourishing more than ever. marinas and water bilges or whatever are getting clogged with their jelliness. give it time, they’ll be the only lifeform in the ocean.

  • JOKER // July 29, 2009 at 2:08 am
